artificiel is a creation studio that is dedicated to producing artworks through digital technologies. The works have different formats, from installation to performance, and are presented as exhibitions, stage-based shows or in-situ interventions. Sound art, visual art, software/hardware design and context are integrated in each project.

All our works are linked by the constant preoccupation of rigor and pertinence in regards to the artistic praxis and techniques that underline creation. Getting away from tools made for the industries; avoiding practices established for production; avoid the esthetisation of surfaces in order to reveal structure and inherent tensions to the chosen materials: these principles are the result of research made for the past 10 years by Alexandre Burton on the digital art creation practice. By applying these ideas on a wide range of projects and ways of workings, he manages to reveal a sensibility close to the objective phenomena, without relying on superficial mediatization.

Another common particularity is the necessity to incarnate the live experience component in the design of the work. Not in terms of «interactivity» for the spectator, but in terms of articulability for the artist, since it's the artist which is conferred the responsibility of the finality of the work. Although creating instruments and contexts can be considered a means of expression, it is not an end in itself; once instruments are birthed, we must learn, understand and master them in order to make art.

The mode of operation of the studio is slow and iterative. A work can take years to get from ideation to presentation, and is often contaminated by adjacent projects. It is by allowing time for ideas to settle and organize themselves based on their internal logic, and by minimizing tensions and pressure linked to production and delivery that the artist gives himself all the chances to observe and understand his own expressive gesture.
